During July 20-22, leading scientists from 14 nations will gather at New York City College of Technology (City Tech) to discuss recent advancements in near-term solar sailing missions, solar sailing technologies and solar sailing physics.
Scientists from the U.S., Luxembourg, Portugal, Brazil, Canada, China, Italy, France, Sweden, Spain, Russia, Germany, Japan and the U.K., will convene for the Second International Symposium on Solar Sailing, hosted by City Tech.
With over 40 presentations, the symposium will highlight the testing and dynamic analysis of solar sails, structural concepts and advanced materials of solar sails, solar spacecraft protection and space environmental effects, solar spacecraft charging, navigation, modeling, control, enabling technologies, programs and mission applications.
Professor Kezerashvili will edit the proceedings from this symposium for a special edition of ‘Advances in Space Research,’ which is the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR)’s official journal.
Some of the presentations and its presenters at the symposium include James Cantrell of Strategic Space Development, Inc. (USA) and Louis Friedman of the Planetary Society (USA) will present "History of Solar Sailing Flights"; Junichiro Kawaguchi of JAXA Space Exploration Center (Japan) will present "Solar Power Sail – Hybrid Propulsion and its Applications"; Les Johnson of NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (USA) will present "Status of Solar Sail Technology Within NASA"; Roman Kezerashvili of City Tech (USA) will present "Using a Solar Sail Mission to Test Fundamental Physics" and Colin McInnes and Eur Ing Malcolm Macdonald of University of Strathclyde (UK) will present "Solar Sail Mission Applications and Future Advancement".
