A recent study report published by Greenpeace International and Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) indicates that wind energy will fulfill around 12% of the worldwide power demand by 2020 and the figure will go up to 22% by 2030.
The report titled Global Wind Energy Outlook 2010, elaborates how wind energy generation can play an important role in meeting the increasing energy demand all over the world and help in reduction of greenhouse gas releases. The report projects that the wind power installations will cross 1,000 GW capacities by the year 2020 which in turn can offset nearly 1.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. The projected carbon dioxide offsets roughly represents nearly 50 to 75% carbon dioxide reductions agreed earlier by the leading industrialized countries during the Copenhagen summit. The report predicts that the wind power generation will reach over 2,300 GW by the year 2030 and will offset over 34 billion tons of CO2 emissions. The report indicates that in addition to the mentioned ecological benefits, the employment growth in wind power sector will reach over 3 million positions in 2030 from the modest 600,000 positions currently available. The report released a little before the China Wind Power 2010 event predicts that the wind power generation capability of China will grow by 10 times by the year 2020 from its capability of 25 GW quoted at the end of the year 2009.
Steve Sawyer, Secretary General of GWEC, said that wind energy has the capability to increase the worldwide power production with reduced carbon emissions and he added that only a steadfast governmental policy will make it possible.
