National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has selected Semprius for negotiating a $3 million subcontract for the commercialization of its proprietary solar energy technology. U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is funding the subcontract. Semprius is one among four companies that has been selected for NREL’s PV Technology Incubator Program. The goal of the PV Technology Incubator Program is to speed up the commercialization of solar photovoltaic systems.
The award from NREL confirms Semprius’ novel solar energy technology has the potential to make the generation of solar energy economically feasible. The company, based on its micro-transfer printing technology is commercializing its innovative solar module arrays.
The solar module arrays from the company offer multiple benefits such as high capacity factor, high efficiency and low installed cost. These factors enable the generation of solar electricity at very low costs in dry and sunny climates. In addition, the module’s scalable design enables it be utilized for distributed energy generation for industrial and commercial projects as well as for large scale utility installations.
Joe Carr, Semprius President and CEO, said that company is proud to be selected for the award and will utilize the subcontract for the development and demonstration of the novel solar technology at pilot plant scale, which is vital before proceeding with full scale production.
