Alessandro Pirolini

Alessandro has a BEng (hons) in Material Science and Technology, specialising in Magnetic Materials, from the University of Birmingham. After graduating, he completed a brief spell working for an aerosol manufacturer and then pursued his love for skiing by becoming a Ski Rep in the Italian Dolomites for 5 months. Upon his return to the UK, Alessandro decided to use his knowledge of Material Science to secure a position within the Editorial Team at AZoNetwork.

When not at work, Alessandro is often at Chill Factore, out on his road bike or watching Juventus win consecutive Italian league titles.

Toxic Algal Blooms in Klamath River Dams Create Unsafe Water Conditions

A research team from Oregon State University has discovered that reservoirs on the Klamath River contain harmful algal blooms that are capable of travelling over 180 miles along the lower parts of the river in just a matter of days. These blooms are unaffected while travelling via hydroelectric turbines and ultimately lead to unsafe water conditions downriver in northern California.

Amendment to Protect Deep Sea Corals Approved by Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council

An amendment has been approved by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council this week for the creation of “deep sea coral zones” in the Mid-Atlantic as a measure to protect deep sea corals that are vulnerable to damage from bottom-tending fishing gear. On approval from the Secretary of Commerce, the zones will be formed in the regions where corals have been widely found or likely to be present.
