Benigno S. Aquino III, President of Philippines, has inaugurated the Hedcor Sibulan Hydropower plant in Davao del Sur. During the inauguration Aquino thanked the efforts of the private company in settling down the power shortage problem in Mindanao and said that the plant stands as evidence of successful participation of the populace with the private sector.
The plant constructed with the private participation of AboitizPower Corporation a public owned holding company in Philippines is expected to generate over 200 million kWh of renewable energy that will help Mindanao region to tide over its power shortage. Erramon Aboitiz, President of the company, said that the plant produces eco friendly electric power that reduces greenhouse gas emissions to a large extent. He added that the hydropower plant is the first of such a plant in the country to get registered as a Clean Development Mechanism project within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and such registration will enable the plant to trade manifested emission reduction units to countries with advanced industrialization.
The 42.5 MW hydropower plant constructed over Sibulan and Baroring rivers is a run-of-the river type of plant that utilizes the natural flow of the river and is constructed at a cost of P6 million. The plant in turn has bestowed Mindanao region with approximately 49 kilometers of new improved roads, electrification to the rural areas and generation of around 1,100 local jobs.
