Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, in Chattanooga City is looking forward to using solar energy by availing $5 million funding to build a solar energy farm.
According to John Naylor, Vice President of Planning and Development at the Airport, initially around 4,000 solar panels will be erected over the airfield. He said that since the construction of a proper infrastructure to connect the power produced from the farm to the airport building became unviable due to high cost factors, the airport has plans to enter into contract with EPB, a private, not-for-profit power distributor and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a government owned corporation.
Naylor explained that the non-reflective type of solar panels proposed for the project will attract about 92% of the sun light to generate power and will not pose a threat to the airport with reflection. He quoted the other airports such as Fresno, Calif, and Denver that have installed solar panels for power, as examples for such installation.
