Pratt + Whitney Power Systems to Supply Turboden ORC Systems to Sopogy

Pratt & Whitney Power Systems (PWPS) has contracted an accord with Sopogy, a Hawaii-based company, to supply two Turboden Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems.

The units supplied by PWPS will work in combination with the installed solar collectors that utilize the concentrated solar power to generate heat, and the incorporated ORC units will seize the generated heat to produce electricity.

The two Turboden TD 27 HR Organic Rankine Cycle systems to be installed at the location will absorb the heat generated by the MicroCSP solar collectors supplied by Sopogy, in a receiver tube to heat the fluid stored in the tube to produce a heat source with high-level temperature. The heated fluid will be utilized as an energy source to run the ORC units. The installation is first of its kind proposed for a solar thermal usage. The company is planning to commence the installation in the last quarter of the year 2011.

The Turboden ORC systems provided by the company are available in output ranges from 280 kW to 10 MW for use along with renewable energy power. The exclusive closed-cycle process included in the systems allows power generation even in low to moderate temperature level. The product is designed to utilize an enclosed structure to work without producing carbon emissions. The systems can be designed to generate up to 60 MW power securely.

I think it is good that CSP energy can be captured and used in an ORC. I also think that CSP temperature is too high for ORC and the cost of ORC is very high compared to the cost to manufacture. This is driven entirely by the US government's subsidy, $1250 per KW of capacity, which is more than 100% of the ORC cost. Pratt and Whitney is making all the money and do you blame them. The question is who did they pay to make the ruling.
