Lockheed Martin Named Among Top 56 Companies on 2013 Global Carbon Performance Leadership Index

CDP, previously known as Carbon Disclosure Project, has recognized Lockheed Martin as one of the world’s top companies for addressing climate change in its operations.

CDP’s Global 500 Climate Change Report named Lockheed Martin one of the top 56 companies worldwide on its 2013 Global Carbon Performance Leadership Index. This marks the third consecutive year that Lockheed Martin has been recognized for its exceptional carbon performance, receiving the top “A” rating, the longest performance leadership period in the aerospace and defense sector.

“This achievement is important to the broader sustainability program we are establishing at Lockheed Martin and shows investors and customers that we are committed to socially and environmentally responsible long-term growth,” said Leo S. Mackay, Jr., vice president of Ethics and Sustainability for Lockheed Martin.

CDP holds the largest collection of primary data on corporate impacts on carbon, energy, climate change, water and forests. They work with corporations and investors globally to advance the strategies and reduce the risks posed by climate change by asking almost 6,000 of the world’s largest companies to report on their climate strategies, natural resource reduction, greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.

“We’re pleased that CDP has once again recognized our efforts to reducing our carbon footprint,” said Carol B. Cala, Lockheed Martin vice president of Energy, Environment, Safety and Health. “Our sustained investments in energy efficiency are a reflection of our company’s commitment to protecting the environment and the health of our planet, while also improving the sustainability of our products and operations.”

Last year, the corporation met its original ‘Go Green’ goals several months early, which resulted in $20.6 million in reinvestment opportunities due to energy and water use reductions. In 2012, Lockheed Martin announced a new set of aggressive goals by the year 2020: further reducing carbon emissions, facility energy use, waste to landfills and water usage.

Lockheed Martin has announced several recent cutting-edge innovations related to energy efficiency and climate change mitigation. From a technology perspective, the company’s work in nanotechnology is strengthening, lightening, and increasing capabilities of our systems, from the F-35 Lightning II to the Littoral Combat Ship. For example, nanomaterials in batteries could increase the range and recharging speed available for electric vehicles.
