Verne Global, an innovative, UK-based developer of energy efficient data center campuses, today announced that the Proof of Concept (PoC) study they participated in with the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA) has been recognized with an Environmental Leader Award for Top Project of the Year 2014.
Verne Global, and customers Datapipe and BMW, worked with the ODCA in an effort to demonstrate how companies can improve environmental efficiency and energy management while maintaining a healthy bottom line. The study was designed to prove how organizations from across the cloud ecosystem can utilize the ODCA Carbon Footprint and Energy Efficiency Usage Model to compare, measure and ultimately optimize enterprise cloud CO2 emissions.
The amount of data being created today is leading to questions of where to economically and ecologically store and process that information. As the number of data centers increase to address market demand, so does the amount of power, carbon footprint and ultimately, overall costs for companies. With global data center IP traffic expected to triple over the next 5 years and 80% of the world’s energy still being produced by fossil fuels, it is critical for companies to understand how they can start addressing this growing problem today. The ODCA PoC study and usage model enables companies to compare vendor solutions as it relates to implementing environmentally-sustainable initiatives. As part of the study, Verne Global was able to effectively showcase how companies can leverage the ODCA usage model to deploy green and energy efficient cloud services from its 100% renewably powered data center campus in Iceland. The PoC study team additionally included Intel, Atos, National Australia Bank, and T-Systems.
