The Importance of Sustainable Development

Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging, part of Rio Tinto Alcan's packaging unit, announced that, for the second consecutive year, it will participate in an initiative sponsored by the United Nations for the Environment Program (UNEP) in the context of World Environment Day. The theme for this event is "Kick the Habit: Towards a Low Carbon Economy", and will be celebrated on June 5th around the world.

"Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging recognizes the importance of sustainable development and is focused on reducing its environmental footprint. We have made this day an annual event, which gives us a concrete opportunity to educate our employees about environmental issues and solicit their participation in sustainability-related activities," said Mike Schmitt, president of Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging.

In 2007 the day was a great success and there were over twenty activities and special events that took place in Alcan Packaging Global Pharmaceutical sites around the world, such as the distribution of shrubs to employees, tree planting and landscaping of neighboring sites, the organization of conferences on the subject of the environment and clean-up activities in the community.

Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging will continue their commitment to World Environment Day this year with the implementation of new initiatives, including a design contest for the children of employees on the subject of the environment and an internal 'Going Low Carbon' quiz for employees.

"We believe that once again this year, our sites will demonstrate their ingenuity and will distinguish themselves by putting in place innovative activities with regard to sustainable development, such as awareness campaigns and partnerships with local and national associations that support the environment," said Michael Rubenstein, Chief Growth and Innovation Officer, Alcan Packaging.
