Determining PV Performance Ratios

There are several challenges to address, and aspects to consider when building a solar energy plant. The path from engineering to becoming fully operational is often long and arduous, with many stakeholders that need attention.

One of the most crucial aspects of this process is monitoring the performance ratio (PR). It is important to begin this process correctly and use the appropriate techniques to measure the effectiveness of a solar project.

Performance Ratio Challenges

The performance ratio is typically understood as a comparison between the final (actual) yield and the reference (design) yield.

Performance ratios for a specific solar energy project are varied, theoretical and actual. These are generally related to different phases of the project, for example, its design, installation, commissioning, contractual agreements and operation.

Many factors will also influence the calculated outcome, including environmental conditions and the choice of components.

Kipp & Zonen has published a whitepaper that summarizes and explores the six key factors that influence PR and how to address these, allowing users to select a performance ratio that is best suited to their needs.
