Case Study on the Acomb Landing water processing plant

When constructing the Acomb Landing project, a sophisticated water treatment plant with an output capacity of 35ML/day drinking water to process raw water from the River Ouse, Yorkshire Water and the principal contractor AECOM selected Primozone as the preferred ozone supplier.

The Requirement

Finding new technology and novel solutions capable of minimizing total cost of ownership was a key driver for the water treatment project. According to AECOM’s Project Manager, Graham Tinson, the company was in search of new ozone generator technology for quite a while and identified the technology it was looking for with Primozone.

Primozone’s Solution

The ozone water treatment solution designed by Primozone is a solution that lowered the cost and secured redundancy thanks to the help of the innovative energy-efficient modular plate reactor technology. The modularity and built-in redundancy of the Primozone concept is able to reduce the specified ozone capacity by 25%. The modular concept also reduced the risk for downtime. Since the installation of the Primozone ozone solution in November 2012, up-time has been 100% during the operation of the water treatment works.

The key components of the Primozone ozone solution installed at Acomb Landing (Figure 1) are as follows:

  • Three Primozone® GM18 ozone generators
  • Two Primozone® DM ozone destructors
  • Dissolution module with Statiflow static mixer
  • Primozone® system controller
  • Run on LOX

The LOX-tank feeding the ozone generators is shown in Figure 2.

Advantages of Primozone Ozone Solution

AECOM stated that Primozone ozone solutions are more advantageous both in terms of lower CAPEX and OPEX than traditional ozone generating solutions, and owing to its fairly simple modular design. The raw water from the River Ouse is potentially contaminated with high levels of pesticides because the valley around the river is a heavy agricultural area with high flood resilience. The Primozone ozone solution, in conjunction with granular activated carbon absorbers, removes the pesticides present in the water. A schematic of the Primozone ozone solution at the Acomb Landing plant is depicted in Figure 3.

The complete ozone solution delivered to Acomb Landing is based on efficient ozone generation and ozone dissolution that removes pesticides in the water.
