General Purpose Ultrasonic Sensors for Indoor and Outdoor Applications

The name “ToughSonic” was inspired by the compact, rugged, ultrasonic sensors from Senix. These sensors are Senix’s flagship products containing heavy-duty electronics epoxy potted into type 316 stainless steel housings. They also have ruggedized piezoelectric transducers and permanently attached cables.

ToughSonic® sensors are used in remote monitoring stations from the Alaskan oil fields to the Australian outback. The sensors are installed in some of the harshest factory surroundings, and on heavy construction and farm equipment. Users can depend on a ToughSonic® when an ordinary sensor fails to fulfill their requirements.

Smart Communications

All the sensors are provided with serial data communications to connect with the user’s equipment or SenixVIEW setup software. The RS-485 or RS-232 model can be chosen, with the below communications format:

  • Baud rates from 9600 (default) to 115,200 bps
  • Selectable Modbus (default) or ASCII streaming protocols
  • Several other features, all modifiable using SenixVIEW software

The RS-485 Serial Data Interface is recommended unless connecting to an RS-232 device. The advantages of RS-485 over RS-232 are listed below:

  • Permits longer cable lengths at greater baud rates
  • Multi-sensor Modbus-addressable RS-485 networks
  • Improved noise immunity in industrial environments
  • Bottom line: additional capability and high value

Since these sensors power-on and are ready to measure in less than 1 second, energy is conserved in battery-driven applications. If only a serial data interface is needed, all models are available without the added analog and switch outputs, at an economical rate with less power consumption, and they also use a 4-wire dual twisted pair (plus drain) data cable rather than the regular 6- or 9-wire cable.

Maximum Flexibility

All sensor outputs are SenixVIEW configurable by users.

  • Ability to calibrate analogs between any two distances, no-target time delay, positive or negative slope, and adjustable analog limits
  • Switches are available with both hysteresis and window modes, time delays (on, off, and no target)
  • All switches and analogs have response settings for power-on initialization, SYNC lost, and loss of target echo (delay and state)

Smart Teach Button

Sensors are available with a default setup but several features are modifiable using the rear push-button (except ToughSonic® 50). It is also possible to reset the default setup by using the push-button, or by deactivating the button.

Adjustment is more powerful and easier when the SenixVIEW software is used.
