Symbrosia grows a red seaweed, Asparagopsis taxiformis, with sun and seawater.
It then uses 100% renewable energy to process the seaweed as livestock feed material that reduces methane emissions in cows, sheep, goats and buffalo by over 80%.
Symbrosia is currently scaling up production in Kailua Kona, HI at its pilot facility.
In 2014, researchers out of James Cook University and CSIRO profiled a number of native Australian seaweeds for their potential to reduce methane emissions when utilized as a feed additive for livestock.
Asparagopsis taxiformis outperformed all others:
Trials are showing that 0.5% inclusion could result in a sustained 80% methane reduction - a true sweet spot for the industry.
