Developing the Smallest, Safest and Most Effective Nuclear Power Sources

insights from industryJay Jiang YuFounder and CEONANO Nuclear Energy, Inc.

AZoCleantech speaks to Jay Jiang Yu, Founder and CEO of NANO Nuclear Energy, Inc., about the company's groundbreaking nuclear power sources that are disrupting the industry and leading the way to a more sustainable future.

What is the most important step society must take to curb climate change?

I believe it is essential to realize there is a growing climate crisis and we need to start building innovative solutions that prepare us for the future.

Can you explain what NANO Nuclear Energy does and its critical technology?

NANO Nuclear Energy Inc. is a vertically integrated DeepTech company emerging from the shared micro-Small Modular Reactor (µSMR) and Advanced Nuclear Reactor (ANR) ambitions of a world-class nuclear engineering team working alongside business and industry professionals, possessing strong relationships with governments and the private and public nuclear industries.

The company is committed to providing smaller, cheaper, and safer nuclear energy solutions for the future by incorporating the latest technology into its own proprietary novel reactor designs, intellectual properties, and research methods through its subsidiary, HALEU Energy Fuel Inc.

The subsidiary will focus on developing a domestic source for a High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fuel fabrication pipeline for the broader advanced nuclear reactor industry and providing fuel to power NANO Nuclear reactors.

“ZEUS”, a Solid Core Battery Reactor, and “ODIN”, a Low-Pressure Coolant Reactor, are NANO Nuclear Energy’s first generation of portable, on-demand capable, advanced nuclear microreactors.

NANO Nuclear Energy intends to progress its collaborative research projects towards development, rigs and models, zero-power reactors, and ultimately reactor manufacture and deployments.

The company envisions readily replaceable mobile reactors, which it can provide to customers and operative personnel, to power projects, residential and commercial enterprises, and major development projects.

NANO Nuclear is developing its proprietary portable and on-demand capable micro-Small Modular Reactor (mSMR), “ZEUS” and “ODIN””.

The “ZEUS” and “ODIN” designs will be modular and enable them to connect with local power grids or power systems, revolutionizing how remote communities, mining projects, military bases, natural disasters, among others, obtain consistent electricity.

How do NANO Nuclear Energy’s nuclear energy solutions differ from others on the market?

We are different because we are building portable, on-demand capable, advanced nuclear microreactors, aka “Nuclear Batteries”, that can be transported worldwide.

How do your nuclear products represent a vital step towards accelerating sustainable energy on a global scale?

The company is generating clean, carbon-free energy solutions worldwide and replacing diesel generators as part of its goal to #ThePathToZero.

What are the current limitations and risks of nuclear reactor technology and how could they be addressed?

Limitations include public sentiment and the general public accepting nuclear energy as the leading form of clean energy. Education is critical to address the public's perception. Nuclear energy is safer than wind; we need perception to match reality.

What challenges has your team faced and how have these been overcome?

The company faces standard regulatory challenges but is tackling these hurdles with early engagement with the regulator and the government.

What are your company's next steps, and are there any exciting developments you can discuss?

Yes, there will be many more technical news updates for both ‘ZEUS’ and ‘ODIN’. There will also be additional former leaders in this sector that will be joining us. We will continue our journey on #ThePathToZero.
