How Much Will Solar Panel Installation in the Home Save Me?

Solar power is a clean, renewable energy which produces zero waste and greenhouse emissions. There are a number of technologies available for harnessing solar energy effectively. One such technology is solar or photovoltaic panels that convert light into electricity.

Solar panels are operated using a photoelectric effect which is when a small electric current is produced when certain materials are exposed to light. Solar panels consist of an array of photovoltaic cells that receive maximum amount of sunlight which is then converted into electricity.

Most solar panels are made up of crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells. However, there are a number of alternatives that are currently being researched. Thin film cells are a lightweight, flexible and inexpensive option. Multi-junction cells, on the other hand, are over 43% efficient than conventional photovoltaic cells in converting sunlight into electricity.

Solar panel installation in homes can provide power to meet most energy needs. Photovoltaic panels that endure extreme weather conditions are the most ideal for home use to ensure efficient performance.

According to experts, based on the size of the solar panel you choose to install, you can save an average of 50% of your electricity bill. The Energy Saving Trust estimates suggest that a 4 kWp system can generate around 3700 kWh of power a year, which is an approximate equivalent to the electricity requirements of a typical household.

Another advantage of solar panel installation that determines your savings is subsidies in the form of tax credits and rebates based on where you live. If your solar system is eligible for the 'feed-in tariff scheme', you will get paid for the electricity you generate and use. Your energy supplier will pay you a set rate for each unit you produce as well as export it to the grid.

Could there be a time where solar panel installation in the home is the norm?

Some of the key benefits for installing solar panels in the home are:

  • Lower electricity bills
  • Clean energy
  • Option to purchase, lease or finance your solar power system in selected regions
  • Low maintenance cost
  • Reduction in carbon footprint
  • Affordable and portable

The widespread availability of photovoltaic panels makes installation a primary choice for producing clean energy at low cost. Unlike other carbon-based energy sources, solar panels provide enhanced energy security as they need nothing more than sunlight for producing energy.

They also produce high amounts of electricity during the day when most markets are in peak energy demand. The solar panel market has the potential to meet increasing global energy demands and with a high energy production capacity, the future of solar panels is bright.

As the demand for power continues to increase, focus is turning to clean and abundant solar power which is helping nations across the world meet a significant percentage of their energy demand.
