Westport Innovations Inc a renowned company engaged in the development of low emission transportation and alternative fuel technologies has announced the signing of an agreement with Volvo Powertrain an auxiliary company of Volvo AB. The agreement defines the task of Westport in formulating biogas and natural gas powered engine products for Volvo.
The main features of this long term agreement includes Westport and Volvo to reciprocally work together for the prompt introduction of gaseous fuel engines and share the risks involved in the development of such a product. Volvo will compensate all the engineering and development costs incurred by Westport during the successful development of the product. Westport will take measures for supply of all gas-related constituents. Westport is expected to create revenue out of every new gas/biogas engine produced and sold.
David Demers who leads Westport Innovations as CEO confirmed the scope of their commitment with Volvo that opens a growing market and further explained the use of natural gas and biogas as choice of fuel for commercial vehicles and the expected production of low emission and clean fuel using engines from Volvo. The planned natural gas engine development enterprise is expected to produce an engine that measures up to the changing emission requirements of the future and will go in for commercial production. As per the agreement Westport will also get involved in identifying market improvement opportunities for Volvo AB brands and assist in building infrastructure, needed for biogas and natural gas where required.
The new agreement amply establishes the ability of Westport in developing viable biogas and natural gas engines and its R&D expertise.
