Gevo Manufactures Jet Fuel, Isobutanol and HydroCarbons from Cellulosic Biomass

Gevo, an advanced biofuels and renewable chemicals company, has announced that it has successfully manufactured jet fuel, isobutanol and hydrocarbons from cellulosic biomass.

The company has unveiled that it has manufactured isobutanol from the fermentable sugars that have its derivation from cellulosic biomass while successfully converting cellulosic isobutanol into jet fuel (paraffinic kerosene) and isobutylene.

Isobutanol production from cellulosic biomass forms a part of the $1.8-million grant announced by the U.S. DoE (Department of Energy) along with the Biomass R&D program of the Department of Energy and Agriculture. This grant is now supporting the ongoing cellulosic biocatalyst development that has been licensed exclusively from Cargill by Gevo.

This manufacturing announcement goes on to demonstrate the progress made by Gevo in making biocatalysts viable for usage in cellulosic biorefineries. Instead of ethanol, companies would have the option of producing isobutanol in line with the cellulosic ethanol industry as it becomes operational. Gevo has its focus on providing a sustainable economy that is bio-based and produces efficient biorefinery systems for providing cost-effective and renewable building block products for the fuel as well as chemical industries.
