Himachal Pradesh’ Nathpa Jhakri Project, which is the nation’s largest hydroelectric project, has surpassed the 6000 MU power generation target. It is now generating 178 MU in excess of the target to be achieved as per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) offered by the Power Ministry.
According to R.P. Singh, SJVNL’s electrical Director, the date for achieving the target was set as December12, 2010. SJVNL owns and operates the 1500 MW Nathpa Project.
Singh revealed that the high silt levels in the Sutlej River had forced the company to shut down the project for a period of 22 days in the months of July and August in the current year and in spite of this the target had been achieved.
Last year the project had generated 7019 MW of power, which was 407 MW in excess of the planned 6612 MW. This financial year’s target was 6700 MW of electricity.
Since the commencement of commercial operation the project had generated a total of 42,180 MW during the previous seven years. The power generated by this program is fed into the power famished grid in the North, which supplies power to Northern India’s Union Territories and States.
