Naval Station Newport Plans to Install 12 Wind Turbines for Power Generation

Naval Station Newport has unveiled its plans to install 12 wind turbines all over the island at places from Portsmouth to Newport. Being one of the major consumers of power in the state of Rhode Island, the Naval Station expends around $12 million on its energy every year.

According to the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and Executive Order 13423, the Naval Station must comply with the set renewable energy goals to meet its power requirement.

Recently, the Naval Station in accordance with the requirement of the National Environmental Policy Act has conducted an open house about the project for the benefit of the residents of the Newport and to explain to them the details of project. Most of the residents who have attended the meeting have voiced their concern about the view of the wind turbines from their homes.  The assessment from the residents considered to be a vital factor for the sanction of the project is anticipated to get completed before September 2011.

The wind project needs to comply with the provisions of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in placing the wind turbines and their size. The other related studies that will be conducted before giving the planning permission for the project include Noise and Shadow Flicker Study, Bird and Bat Biological survey and Marine Mammal Observation study. After arranging the necessary design for the project and finance, Naval Station Newport is anticipated to complete the project in a few years time.
