Action Plan to Meet Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets in Ontario

Ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, GreenProsperity, a group of environmental organizations at Ontario has come up with a plan to reduce global warming and suitable a suitable action plan to control climate change.

According to Rick Smith, Executive Director, Environmental Defence, Ontario will benefit from tackling climate change. To this end, he urges Ontario to develop a program along with its partners Quebec and Western Climate Initiative to invest in clean energy and efficiency.

The findings from the study conducted by David Suzuki Foundation and Pembina Institute have shown that Ontario can create new jobs and increase its economic growth during the next decade through efforts to reduce Greengas emissions.

Bruce Cox, Executive Director of Greenpeace, joins the conversation by saying that by implementing Green Energy Act, protecting forests, reducing air pollution, improving the availability of local food, restricting the usage of the Pickering B nuclear facility, and limiting the expansion of urban localities, action on climate change can be carried on. This will ultimately result in the availability of green jobs.

According to Justin Duncan, staff lawyer of Ecojustice, while preparing for climate changes, pollution emissions must also be controlled. In order to achieve this, GreenProsperity recommends a new approach to everything from using urban lands, protecting Great Lakes, habitats, and endangered species, and also waste reduction.

GreenProsperity urges the Ontario province governance to undertake a broad approach to protect the environment and to address the impact of climate change. According to Franz Hartmann, Executive Director, Toronto Environmental Alliance, when the oil prices soar high, it becomes necessary to think about developing alternative approaches that will be sustainable.

The most important areas that need attention, according to GreenProsperity, include recognizing the responsibilities of the province towards sustainability, making use of green energy, protecting endangered species, and eliminating garbage in products and packaging.
