IEEE Initiates Green Your World Challenge

Technical professional association IEEE, in line with the 2010 World Environment Day (WED) celebration and the positive effect worldwide sustainability technologies have had on the environment, has initiated a call-to-action, requesting citizens to take part in the IEEE Green Your World Challenge.

All through June1, 2010, till June 5, 2010, IEEE has invited worldwide citizens to partake of any of the available five challenges and make a positive contribution to the environment.

The five challenges are: unplug standby electronics; plant trees for creating a sustainable future; reduce daily consumption of water; eco-consciously recycle old computers, mobile phones and TVs through an electronics recycler; and utilize light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) rather than incandescent light bulbs.

The chief executive officer and president of 2010 IEEE Pedro Ray commented that the association and its members constantly pursue sustainability efforts such as implementing irrigation and water conservation systems in underserved regions; engineering faster, smaller semiconductors so as to reduce consumer devices’ carbon footprint; and exploring novel alternative energy sources to preserve the natural resources of the world.
