The announcement of National Biodiesel Board is expected to bring in cheers to the beach lovers of oil coated shorelines. The board announced that methyl esters a derivative of bio-diesel production can be developed into a bio based dissolving agent that is listed as washing medium for cleaning of the shores contaminated with oil spills. An attempt is made to encourage this product to clean up oil spills along the shorelines especially those in the more susceptible swamp surroundings.
The simple cleaning process includes spraying of the methyl esters by utilizing shallow draft boats over oil covered swamp surroundings or those diminutive beaches that do not have land access. The bio based solvent when applied over the oil sleek affected marsh lands will slowly dissolve the oil spill from the plants and wash it off by utilizing the wave splashes and by employing mechanical skimmers, the oil spill residues can be cleaned. The methyl esters mixture offers the benefit of recycling and reuse.
Randall Von Wedel, CytoCulture International’s founder and principal biochemist, said that his company introduced the method in the year 1990. He added that unlike chemical dispersants that dissolved the oil back into the water, the bio based solution does not dissolve the oil instead it just removes the oil from the marsh vegetations and the shoreline and drifts it back into the sea water for easy elimination.
