EPRI, Georgia Power Study Effects of Solar Power Systems on Utility's Distribution System

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Georgia Power are conducting a research to study the impact of solar photovoltaic power systems on the utility's distribution system.

During the study, 50 photovoltaic power systems are being deployed in seven cities across  Georgia state and approximately eight compact systems will be deployed on a single distribution line in individual cities. Solar intensity, cloud cover and temperature will be evaluated and locations were selected based on various environmental factors.

During the 18-month study period, EPRI will monitor both sunlight input and power output of individual solar modules at single-second intervals. It will then calculate the amount of power produced from the solar modules and their performance under different environmental settings. Long-term results will be continuously monitored by Georgia Power. The study will help in determining the range of photovoltaic performance in the state as well as the impact of operations on Georgia Power's distribution system. The study will also help in comparing the passing clouds and other variable problems and will help in understanding the viability of photovoltaic installations on distribution line.

Photovoltaic panels have been deployed in Conley, Savannah, Columbus, Augusta, Macon, Valdosta and Rome. Georgia Power is carrying out the installation process, while EPRI will own the panels.
