Nexant Client Receives “Beacon for Energy” Certificate from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources

Acushnet Company of Fairhaven, a customer of smart grid solutions provider for the utilities sector Nexant and the producer of leading golf brands such as Cobra and FootJoy, was due to receive the “Beacon for Energy” certificate from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) on 16 November. Acushnet was scheduled to receive the certificate from Philip Giudice, the commissioner of DOER at the company’s Ball Plant II facility in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Nexant planned to award $300,000 to the company, which represents the proceeds achievable from selling Acushnet’s energy credits in the following year.

The certificate acknowledges Acushnet’s commitment to clean energy adoption, exemplified by its heat and power cogeneration (CHP) initiatives. Acushnet is also the first company to have established infrastructure approved under the Alternate Energy Portfolio Standard (APS) for the purpose, which will enable the company to develop alternative energy credits under the DOER. The Massachusetts Commonwealth set up the APS in 2008 to open up new opportunities for commerce and trade for companies and institutions in the renewable and other energy segments. Through its mandates, the APS is aimed at achieving reduced levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

According to the Senior Director of Acushnet, who oversees the golf ball engineering and technology operations of the company, Hank Conaty, Acushnet initiated cogeneration activities as part of its ongoing energy efficiency measures involving vast investments in the areas of reducing carbon footprint, energy consumption and identifying and adopting sustainable energy technologies. Nexant’s clean energy professionals are staying back with Acushnet to assist the company in creating credits at the company’s Titleist Golf Ball Plant II facility for subsequent trade of credits. Acushnet seeks to achieve lower energy expenses as well as enhance alternative energy investment paybacks at this plant with the help of Nexant.

Nexant seeks to help other businesses in the trade of energy credits by creating them through planned energy efficiency measures, one of which is cogeneration. Through its Clean Energy Markets segment, a pioneer in energy efficiency solution marketing, Nexant covers businesses in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Connecticut create credits representing more than 1.25 billion kWhs of energy. The created credits can offset GHG emissions of more than 500,000 metric tons.
