Mitsubishi Electric, Hitachi and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Plan to Integrate Hydroelectric Systems Operations

Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited have joined together to discuss consolidation of operations of their hydroelectric power generating systems. The companies have taken this step forward to build a functional organization to integrate various activities in relation to hydroelectric power systems.

This includes operations such as marketing and servicing. Manufacturing, development activities and design will also be undertaken jointly.

Hydroelectric power generation continues to remain a viable source of clean energy and contributes to the development of a low carbon society. While the number of large-scale projects in Japan is decreasing, there is a need to maintain and upgrade existing facilities. There is a demand for clean hydroelectric energy in China. Latin America, India, Europe are also expanding operations in the market. Hence this joint venture has been undertaken to maintain and to pass on new technologies and expertise to the next generation through the integration of these companies.

Hitachi Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited also wish to increase competitiveness in this field where factors such as high speed and large capacities as well as high heads are prerequisites. They will concentrate in the areas of variable speed pump storage, a superior method of power generation which is of immense value in the market, thus hoping to gain the first position worldwide. Coordination between the production facilities of the three companies and joint development of overseas operations will establish an optimum production structure for manufacture.

The three companies plan to secure specific marketing needs so they may strengthen and spread out their hydroelectric power generating systems through development and advance technology. In this way, the three companies wish to further increase their contributions to supplying energy needs as well as establishing a low carbon society.
