MiaSolé, which manufactures CIGS thin film solar panels, announced that its achievement of 15.7% efficiency has been confirmed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the US Department of Energy. The 15.7% efficiency was achieved for the company’s large area production solar modules that are of 1 sq. m. size.
Earlier in September 2010, the company had achieved 14.3% efficiency. The newly achieved efficiency of 15.7% is the highest shown for thin film modules in the commercial size category. This also closes the gap with the efficiencies of polycrystalline silicon modules.
The CEO of MiaSolé, Dr. Joseph Laia, commented that this achievement demonstrates the company’s capability to produce full scale CIGS solar modules with efficiencies better than or equal to polycrystalline modules, at the manufacturing cost of thin-film modules. He added that the company is confident about bringing highly-efficient CIGS modules to the market.
