Suntech Power, a manufacturer of solar panels for utility, commercial, industrial and residential usages, has declared its intentions to build a 10 MW solar power installation over the roof of the world to supply clean power to thousands of households in the Tibetan plateau.
Suntech Power will install the solar modules approximately 4,000 meters above the sea level in Chek Kang village in Sangri County, Shannan Prefecture, Tibet. The solar power generation facility slated for completion in the middle of 2011 will produce approximately 20,000 MWh of clean power annually and assist in the economic growth of Tibet. The 10 MW solar power facility will assist in overcoming the frequent peak hour power shortages and will reduce the dependence of the region on hydroelectric power supply.
Suntech has been engaged in rural power projects in Tibet region for a few years. The company has gifted over 50 individual solar systems to community centers, schools and houses in the region. The company has also installed a solar power facility at the base camp of Mount Everest for the benefit of mountain trekkers.
