Government of Canada to Support Nova Scotia’s FORCE Tidal Energy Project

Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) has been selected under the Clean and Renewable Energy Demonstrations portion of government’s clean energy fund. FORCE, which is part of 19 other successful projects, will altogether receive up to $146 million for five years to support clean and renewable energy and smart grid technology implementation.

FORCE is a tidal energy project of Nova Scotia that has earned the support from the Government of Canada’s Clean Energy Fund. A sum of between $10 to $20 million is expected to be received by FORCE as a result of signing a contribution agreement with the Government of Canada. FORCE expects this funding to help with shared development costs such as the construction of a subsea transmission cable to enable future and current tidal devices to directly deliver power to the electricity grid.

John Woods, Chairman of FORCE, remarked that the position of FORCE as a leading center for tidal research and technology in North America is further strengthened by this support and is pleased that Ottawa has recognized the significance of this project.

Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, remarked that investments in clean energy technologies are an important part of the Government’s strategy to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and improve the environment. The FORCE project funded by the government will help Canada to reach a high platform in clean energy technology and it will also help to create fresh jobs for the people of Canada.
