Animal Shelter to Go Green with Solar Power

Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), an animal community center, has turned out to be the first among the animal shelters to go green by switching over to solar power and signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tioga Energy and did not make any capital investment for the project.

Tioga Energy, a primary renewable energy service provider to the government, commercial and non-profit institutions, owns and operates the solar power system provided at the center,

The 274 kW system comprises 1,335 solar panels and generates enough power to meet nearly 33% of the community center’s total power requirement. The solar power system is expected to save around $50,000 on energy costs every year.

Tioga Energy has also installed energy efficiency products such as advanced heat recovery system and cool roofing to lessen its air conditioning and building heating costs. Its re-use of 90% concrete from its previous building foundation and other energy saving systems installed in the building makes this community center eligible for LEED certification. The animal center is attempting to become the first Gold Certified animal community center in USA.
