Enerkem to Produce Biofuel from Municipal Solid Waste

Enerkem Inc, a known waste-to-biofuel manufacturing company, has joined hands with City of Edmonton and the Government of Alberta, and announced the groundbreaking function of its proposed municipal waste-to-biofuel manufacturing facility at Edmonton. The function was attended by Ed Stelmach, Premier of Alberta, Stephen Mandel, Mayor of Edmonton and Vincent Chornet, CEO of Enerkem.

The advanced biofuel plant to be located in Edmonton Alberta is designed to use municipal solid waste as raw material and is rated as the first of such a large industrial level biofuel manufacturing facility. The proposed facility will manufacture around 36 million liters of biofuel annually. The plant to be started with an investment of over CAD$ 80 million will incorporate patented clean technology of Enerkem, and manufacture enough quantity of biofuel to supply fuel to 400,000 cars that use 5% ethanol blend in the fuel. The plant will be constructed and operated by Enerkem’s subsidiary company Enerkem Alberta Biofuels LP. The company has signed a 25 year contract with the city municipality to receive over 100,000 tons of solid waste for biofuel conversion.

The biofuel produced by the company will reduce six million tons of CO2 emissions from the city of Canada over the next 25 years. The new company will introduce around 180 direct and indirect job positions during the construction, technical and operation stages. The plant is scheduled to start its operations by the end of the year 2011.
