Four Housing Group declared that they will commence the construction of its Reed Street Housing project scheme in Rekendyke, South Tyneside next year. The 21 timber-framed carbon-free homes will be solar-powered to produce adequate electricity required for the houses and will have the facility to transfer the excess electric power to the grid.
Groundwork, an urban renewal consulting company, formulated the required basic carbon negative concepts for the project and it took three years to formalize the design. The proposed homes will have south facing windows and the solar panels will be placed in such a way as to receive maximum sunlight. In order to prevent possible heat loss, the north facing facets of each property will be connected to the next property. The housing development of Four Housing Group has achieved the highest code level of 6 established by the government for Sustainable Homes. On completion, the homes will be made available for rent by the company.
Lynda Peacock, director of development and regeneration for Four Housing Group, said that her company and its consultants have worked on various concepts not only to reduce the carbon footprint of the building but also worked on to conserve heat and minimize the wastage of water in the buildings to save on spending for fuel and to reduce carbon emissions. She explained that a local university will be involved in assessing and evaluating the housing scheme for future improvements.
