Globe-Town Website Wins 'Apps for Climate' Global Award

At the first international #Apps4Climate competition conducted by World Bank, Globe-Town.org has won a place among the top three competitors. The 'Apps for Climate' global award was presented at a ceremony held in Washington DC.

Globe-Town.org is a new website developed by a team of researchers at the University of Southampton. The website reveals the facts related to climate change all around the globe. Jack Townsend, a sustainability and web researcher, conceived the application which was developed along with PhD students at the Southampton University's Web Science Doctoral Training Centre. The site graphics were designed by Andrea Prieto, and was developed by architect Richard Gomer along with Will Fyson, Huw Fryer, and Dominic Hobson. Much of its data originates from the open data portal of the World Bank.

The Globe-Town web application provides information about the economy, society and the environment of each country. It provides data about the transmission of climate risks to other far-off countries. The affect of the floods in Thailand in 2011 on Japan’s economy is an example of such a global risk.

According to the World Health Organisation, climate change causes 150,000 deaths every year. Every human-being should know how climate change affects each person and the measures that can be taken to address the global challenge. The Globe-Town website opens up the connections between the global and the local, and this can help jointly explore the risks, problems, responsibilities and the opportunities available for addressing climate change. The interconnectivity will enable more transparency in the efforts.

Globe-Town website is exploring new possibilities, including e-activism, and inducing people to contribute content and crowd-funding projects. These endeavors will help forge new links between countries.
