Rothenburg IV 15.2 MWp Solar Park to Come Up at Former Military Airport

Global photovoltaics company, Gehrlicher Solar, has commenced construction of the solar park Rothenburg IV. The solar power system is expected to generate a total nominal power of 15.2 MW and is located in Rothenburg, Saxony. The installation is being done for KGAL, a provider of innovative financing solutions.

The existing Rothenburg I-III solar parks together provide a total nominal power of 21.8 MWp. The Rothenburg IV is designed to complement the other three and is located on the premises of Rothenburg’s former military airport. Annually, around 15 million kWh of electricity is expected to be generated, which will cater to the requirements of approximately 4,280 three-person households.

The fallow terrain of the previous military airport had been used for military purposes. Gehrlicher Solar will be utilizing 25 ha of the total 30 ha for building substructures. Habitats for meadow-breeding birds are to be created in the rest of the free area. Presently, steel profiles have been rammed into the ground. The GehrTec Base substructure designed for solar modules are to be installed later.

Solar modules of 7.6 MWp from BYD and Yingli, along with 16 SMA inverters, are to be installed. The inverters will convert direct current into alternating current that conforms to the grid. In terms of environmental benefits, the solar plant is expected to save around 13,500 t of CO2 annually.

Gehrlicher Solar CEO, Klaus Gehrlicher stated that, the administrative district, the city, the local associations and the airport operator will benefit from the construction of solar park. The solar park is slated for commissioning on 30 September 2012.
