As e-SAF projects move toward final investment decisions, the choice between the two principal technology routes, Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis and Methanol-to-Jet (MTJ), is hotly debated. While both pathways can deliver drop-in fuels, they differ materially in carbon efficiency, electricity demand, feedstock requirements, product yields and the maturity of key unit operations... differences that can strongly influence project economics and risk.
Topsoe, a leading global provider of advanced technology and solutions for the energy transition, is weighing up the two pathways and challenging assumptions in a forthcoming webinar that pitches state-of-the-art FT implementations such as Topsoe and Sasol’s combined G2L™ eFuels offering against MTJ, across all key criteria.
In a live technical webinar on 19 May 2026, Topsoe and Sasol experts will examine the relative merits of FT and MTJ as production pathways for e-SAF. The webinar, running from 9 to 10 am CEST and including a live Q&A, brings together experts from Topsoe and Sasol to assess how the two pathways compare across yield, economics and risk when evaluated against the same feedstock inputs.
As e-SAF projects advance from planning to investment decisions, technology selection carries significant commercial weight. The session will explore how FT and MTJ compare on carbon efficiency, energy consumption, CO2 feedstock requirements and levelized cost of SAF. The potential for integration with solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology will also be looked at, along with how differences in process design affect project economics.
While recent literature has tended to treat the two pathways as broadly comparable, the webinar will look at where technology maturity, industrial operating experience and bankability create meaningful distinctions in practice. The FT pathway draws on Sasol’s extensive low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch synthesis experience, including long-running commercial operation at the Oryx GTL plant in Qatar, combined with Topsoe’s eREACT syngas generation technology and advanced product upgrading – advantages embedded in the jointly developed G2L eFuels offering.
The session will be presented by Senior Licensing Manager, Pete Cairns and Sudip de Sarkar the Principal Engineer from Topsoe, and Paul Male, Senior Manager at Sasol.
