UPMC Green-IT Initiative Targets 50% Reduction in PC Power Consumption Using Verdiem Software

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has decided to install Verdiem’s Surveyor power management software for personal computers across over 30,000 PCs throughout its health care system network. UPMC seeks to drive down the PC power consumption in its network by half as a result of this initiative.

UPMC will benefit from about $1 million of cost savings per year if this energy saving project is successful. This deployment of Verdiem software is being conducted in collaboration with Duquesne Light Company as one of the initiatives targeted at achieving compliance with the Pennsylvania State Act 129 by 2013. The Act requires all utility distribution firms in the state reduce their power consumption by 1% and 3% by 2011 and 2013, respectively.

Brett Goodwin and John Krolicki, Vice Presidents at Verdiem and UPMC, respectively, have expressed their views on this energy conservation project. Brett Goodwin highlighted his contentment in working with a leading healthcare company in the US such as UPMC, and that the Verdiem software is able to help the company achieve measurable decrease in energy costs.

John Krolicki, mentioned that UPMC is now able to supervise and control the consumption of energy by PCs without intervening with the upgrade and maintenance schedules of desktops, as well as the productivity of users.  As a result, the company has been able to implement green-IT processes in easy and efficient ways.
