Strategic Environmental Assessment for Wave and Tidal Energy in UK

A complete Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is to be carried by England and Wales for wave and tidal energy in their regions.

David Kidney, Energy and Climate Change Minister, announced the plans at the Renewable UK Wave and Tidal Conference 2010. The study will investigate carbon dioxide storage sites, offshore wind sites, including gas and oil activities. Kidney said the country’s objective is to generate as much power as possible within the country itself and its seas are good sources to help achieve this objective.

Kidney said the SEA and other government support including the upcoming Marine Action Plan will help to create a positive climate for the investors that will help the country to retain its number one position in the world in marine energy. According to RenewableUK, by 2020, the installed tidal and wind energy generation capacity could reach 2.2 GW, which is enough to meet the electricity needs of 1.4 million homes.
