Harland + Wolff to Build Substation Platforms for Siemens Offshore Wind Farms

Harland & Wolff Heavy Industries Ltd has won a multi million pound wind energy building contract from Siemens a known global engineering company.

The contract requires the company to design and construct two substation platforms for the proposed Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm to be located ten miles away from the coast of North Wales. The company known for building ships in the past has branched out in recent years into the marine and renewable energy sector which includes construction of offshore wind turbine platforms.

Robert Cooper, Harland & Wolff’s Chief Executive Officer, expressed his happiness for the contract award. He added that the receipt of contract denotes the dedication of the company and its growth in the marine renewable energy segment. Ms. Arlene Foster, Enterprise Minister said that the contract is important for Harland & Wolff to continue to grow as a key market player in the global renewable energy market. She added that the strong knowledge base of Northern Ireland, its skilled engineering professionals, and favorable geographical placing will bring in more opportunities for the manufacturing companies in the upcoming offshore wind energy sector that is valued over £100bn.
