The most recent data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), a power sector planning body of India, states that though the country received more monsoon showers than last year its hydro power generation continued to be static without improvement.
Its power production from hydro power generation stood at 12.23 billion units in August this year without any change in the number of units during the same period last year. However, the water level at 31 reservoirs all over the country showed a marked improvement in the water storage capacity when compared to last year.
The power production from conventional and non renewable energy sources such as coal and gas went on to dominate power generation forming nearly 77% of the total electrical power production of over 66.45 billion units. The power produced from hydro power generation stands at 18.4% of the total electric power generation. The import of hydro electricity from Bhutan persisted at 2% with just one billion units.
The total power generation of India stands at 1.62 lakh MW, which includes 2.9% from nuclear energy, 24.7% from hydro power production and 64.6% from thermal power.
