Iberdrola Renewables to Supply Electricity for Wind Farms

Iberdrola Renewables, the Bonneville Power Administration and Constellation Energy have together launched a pilot wind integration program that allows Iberdrola Renewables towards supplying reserve electricity that is needed for supporting 1,100 MW of variable outputs from wind parks.

Under this pilot program, Iberdrola Renewables has made commitments in over 600 MW of natural gas-powered power through the company’s Klamath Cogeneration Plant (along with the gas peaking units that are adjacently located) and hydropower through an adjacent public power agency. Iberdrola Renewables might also be using wind power towards offsetting generation from the Centralia coal-fired facility of TransAlta Corp’s.

Constellation Energy will be monitoring and controlling this program from its Houston command center on a 24-hour basis. BPA (Bonneville Power Administration) presently hosts approximately 3,011 MW of wind energy on its grid. BPA also interconnects the wind energy plant facilities located in the Columbia River Basin along with the transmission system.
