East Bay Plans to Launch Wind Energy Project in Tiverton

East Bay Energy Consortium has reported last week in the Town Council about the consortium voting for pursuing a location assessment after an extensive feasibility study for the purpose of installing wind energy projects. Thus, Tiverton Industrial Park gets one step closer towards becoming an ideal location for setting up of multiple wind turbines.

Tiverton’s representative, Garry Plunkett, has mentioned that the consortium is about Tiverton’s future since this would turn out to be a win-win situation for this area due to wind energy usage as well as the financial benefits accruing from land leases. The consortium comprises the Rhode Island communities such as Tiverton, Newport, Middletown, Little Compton, Portsmouth, East Providence, Barrington, Warren and Bristol.

The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation has awarded a grant of $335,000 towards continuing preliminary work upon this project while envisioning a 20 – 25 MW wind project estimated at a value of $75 million. Garry Plunkett also opined that the strong winds emerging from the Sakonnet River, the availability of ample land towards placing these wind turbines along with the ability in connecting with the power grid were all the favorable factors that have helped Tiverton in receiving high marks towards hosting this wind energy project.
