Henvey Inlet First Nation (HIFN), a member community of the Anishinabek Nation, declared that Nigig Power owned by the community, has received the feed-in-tariff accord from the Province.
Its wind farm project designed to produce 300 MW is one among the 40 new large scale clean energy projects such as water, wind and solar approved by the Ontario Power Authority. The OPA has in total approved projects worth 872 MW.
Henvey Inlet First Nation (HIFN) is a small community of 650 members located over 20,000 acres of land besides Georgian Bay around three hours distance north of Toronto. The 300 MW project awarded to Nigig Power will produce enough electricity to supply around 70,000 homes every year. The construction of the project is anticipated to commence by 2012.
According to Wayne McQuabbie, Chief of Henvey Inlet First Nation, the project team worked perseveringly for two years for the project. Ken Noble, President of Nigig Power , said that the OPA’s award is an important milestone for the First Nation community. He added that HIFN will zero on a world class developing company for the project because of its size and its capability to bring prosperity to the community.
