Waverley Borough Council has given its nod for a solar project to install solar panels over the homes owned by the council.
Before giving its nod for the installation of solar panels, Waverly has completed the other energy saving measures such as double glazing for the windows, good insulation for the houses and energy conserving boilers for most of the homes occupied by tenants. The council has prepared a report highlighting details such as roof pitch, chimney location and shading of trees and submitted it to the authorities for action.
The council will install the solar panels without making any investment and the renewable energy company engaged for the purpose will spend on the installation costs under a prevailing incentive scheme of the government. The installation if completed for all the 1,500 homes in the council will cost around £10.5 million. The solar installation when completed will save the tenants around £80 and £125 a year in their energy usage bills and surplus energy if any produced, will be connected to the national grid.
The council has plans to carry out the survey work in the coming months and the solar installation will commence from the late summer or early autumn.
