The PowerPlay Solar Development project at Berkshire School is almost complete, this project will be one of the biggest in the state of Massachusetts.
The project is spread over an area of 8 acres at the Berkshire School and is estimated to generate power up to 2 MW. The construction work for the project was initiated during early fall this year, which upon completion will be the largest solar facility in operation in any of the private secondary schools in the US.
The solar project is the result of a collaboration between PowerPlay Solar and Spire Solar systems. Spire Systems is a designer of solar systems located in Bedford. The electrical contract for the project was undertaken by ML Schmitt, located at Springfield. The power generated by the project will take care of 45% of the electricity needs of the school. This power sharing plan is a part of the broad sustainability master plan provided by the students to the School’s Board of Trustees. One of the significant issues that the master plan intends to address is carbon footprint, the plan aims at achieving carbon neutrality by 2016. The senior development partner at PowerPlay Solar Development, Steve Levine, pointed out that the Berkshire students have made significant contribution towards environmental stewardship by committing to the solar power project.
