Clean Currents and SolarCity Partner to Provide Impetus to Solar Power usage

Residents of Maryland and Washington, D.C. are now privy to a unique power purchasing program that is not only environment friendly, but is also pocket-friendly.

Rockville based wind power provider, Clean Currents and solar power provider, SolarCity, are jointly offering a program under which homeowners not only get to purchase solar power at discounted rates vis-à-vis utility power rates, but also have bill payment made easy as they would be provided with a single electric bill that combines their wind, solar and locally supplied energy consumptions.

The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which will provide access to clean power at competitive and fixed rates to consumers, will help hedge against price fluctuations for decades. The highlight of Clean Currents’ PPA is that homeowners are not just signing up for wind power at competitive rates, but are also entitled to free installation of solar panels from SolarCity coupled with insurance and free maintenance and repairs. While the solar power is supplied at discounted rates, there is an incentive for those who sign up for the PPA before the World Environment Day that falls on June 5, 2012. The early subscribers are offered solar power free of charge for the first one month.

SolarCity’ s Chief Revenue Officer, Toby Cory, stated that the single vendor model facilitating the payment of self-generated solar power bill along with the locally supplied power bill was a first of its kind for power consumers in America. Deregulation of electricity markets in 23 states of the U.S, including Maryland and Washington, D.C. has paved the way for such pioneering efforts by providers of clean energy.
