Conference at Bristol to Discuss Sustainability of Managed Landscapes

Academic researchers and representatives from across the landscape industry are meeting at the University of Bristol this week to discuss how to improve the sustainability of managed landscapes.

The one day conference, organised by scientists from the School of Biological Sciences in collaboration with the Cabot Institute, is aimed at landscape architects, landscape planners, academic researchers, industry researchers, environmental practitioners (local councils, charities) and anyone else with an interest in the sustainable management of landscapes.

The aim of the conference is to develop cross-sector approaches to tackle the challenge of developing sustainable approaches to landscape management through integrated research, design and management.

Speakers include Professor Jane Memmott of the University of Bristol on the Urban Pollinators Project, landscape architect Kym Jones on incorporating sustainability in landscape, Becky Coffin and Teija Ahjokoski, of Bristol City Council on the use of urban flower meadow displays as an environmental approach for cityscapes, and Dr Sarah Webster of Defra on environmental landscape policy.

Sustainable landscapes for the future: Research, design and management takes place on Thursday 18 July 2013 from 9.30am at the Wills Hall Conference Centre, Parry's Lane, Stoke Bishop, Bristol, BS9 1AE.

Cabot Institute

The Cabot Institute at the University of Bristol carries out fundamental and responsive research on risks and uncertainties in a changing environment. Its interests include natural hazards, food and energy security, resilience and governance, and human impacts on the environment. Its research fuses rigorous statistical and numerical modelling with a deep understanding of interconnected social, environmental and engineered systems – past, present and future. It seeks to engage wider society – listening to, exploring with, and challenging stakeholders to develop a shared response to 21st century challenges.
