6th Australian (Inter)National Hydrogen Day

The Hydrogen Society of Australia is hosting the 6th Australian (Inter)National Hydrogen Day on 8 October, 2024, at Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia, and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Queensland. This year is the first time the event will be hosted outside of Western Australia.

This year's event is designed to foster connections between industry, academia, government, and the wider community. Attendees can expect engaging presentations, exhibitions, and networking opportunities with some of the most innovative minds in clean energy.

The theme of this year’s celebration revolves around the crucial role hydrogen plays in Australia's pursuit of a sustainable energy mix. As the country pushes toward clean energy transitions, the event provides a platform for conversations around hydrogen’s growing influence. Discussions will focus on its capacity as a clean energy carrier and its progress in hydrogen production, storage, and deployment in various sectors.

Australia’s journey with Hydrogen Day began in 2019, inspired by the US’s National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day. Since then, HSA in partnership with various sponsors organized this event, positioning Australia as a key player in the global hydrogen landscape. Last year's event saw great success, with significant industry participation and public engagement, setting the stage for even broader outreach in 2024.

Key Themes of the Event

This year, HSA will be partnering with Murdoch University and H2E in Perth, and Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, to deliver two in-person and an online free event for Australia Hydrogen Day 2024.

The 6th Australian (Inter)National Hydrogen Day is a timely event as hydrogen continues to emerge as a cornerstone of Australia’s clean energy ambitions. Industry leaders and government representatives will explore how hydrogen can integrate with existing energy systems and drive the country's decarbonization goals.

Key discussions will likely cover the scalability of hydrogen technology, its economic potential, and its environmental benefits, such as reduced carbon emissions and energy storage solutions.

The event also aims to raise public awareness about hydrogen’s potential, encouraging communities to engage in Australia’s clean energy transition. With global demand for clean energy solutions rising, the event strengthens Australia’s role in the hydrogen economy, looking into future innovations that can help reduce the world’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Australia’s hydrogen industry is at a turning point, and the 6th Australia (Inter)National Hydrogen Day provides a platform for stakeholders to connect, collaborate, and shape the country’s energy future. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the conversations and contribute to the growth of hydrogen as a key solution in the fight against climate change.

Green Hydrogen: Where to Next?

On 7 October 2024, the HSA, in collaboration with Sustainable Energy Now, will host a critical discussion on the future of green hydrogen at the WA State Library Theatre in Perth.

The event, titled “Green Hydrogen: Where to Next?”, will bring together key industry leaders to explore the current state and future prospects of green hydrogen as part of the clean energy transition.

The expert panel includes:

  • Lalit Dogra, Director of Hydrogen Energies Transition Strategies at JTSI
  • Leigh Holder, Director of Business Development at Yara Clean Ammonia Australia
  • Kelsey Cross, Technology Development Manager at Fortescue Hydrogen Systems
  • Max van Someren, a renewable energy techno-economics expert from the Net Zero Network

The event comes at a pivotal time, as green hydrogen faces both excitement and challenges. Recent industry developments, including Fortescue’s job cuts and Province Resources' decision to indefinitely halt its HyEnergy project in Carnarvon, have raised questions about the future of green hydrogen in Australia. The panel will address whether these challenges signal the beginning of a downturn or are merely obstacles in an evolving landscape.

Attendees will gain insights into the role green hydrogen could play in Western Australia's clean energy transition, examining critical drivers, limitations, and possible alternatives. The event will conclude with a Q&A session, offering a chance for both experts and newcomers to engage in the conversation.

Networking opportunities, light refreshments, and a remote attendance option via Teams are available.

This event promises to be a valuable platform for those involved in or curious about the future of hydrogen technologies in Australia’s energy mix.
