Funding Process for Proposed Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project Postponed

The participant funding process by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency for the proposed Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project that is to come up in British Columbia is being postponed. The postponement is due to alteration in timelines related with the submission of the Environmental Impact Statement for the project.

The advocate for the project suggested recently that the environmental impact statement for the project will be submitted after additional analysis and field work is completed by fall of 2010 resulting in significant delay in the timelines for the review panel process.

When the timeline for the submission of the environmental impact statement for the project is confirmed by the proponent, the participant funding process will be re-started. When funding process is re-initiated, revised funding amounts and the deadline for submitting the applications will be announced. Current applicants can re-submit their applications during that time.

In May 2009, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency had announced the availability of $250,000 under its Participant Funding Program to help individuals and groups to take part in the environmental review for the Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project.

In the Bute Inlet region, 17 run-of-river hydroelectric facilities is proposed to be built by the Bute Hydro Inc. Associated development works for the projects include access roads, ancillary works, a substation close to the mouth of Southgate River, 216 of 230 kV collector transmission line and 500 kV trunk transmission line from the proposed substation to the current 500 kV substation at Malaspina.
