IAPMO Releases Comprehensive Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement

IAPMO has released a comprehensive Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement providing the Sustainable Building Industry with a revolutionary and powerful tool. The document was created to standardize the sustainable commercial and residential mechanical and plumbing systems.

Dave Viola, IAPMO director of Special Services, said that for the construction of green buildings, the existing building codes are the biggest hurdle. Dave Viola added that IAPMO has released the comprehensive Green Supplement, since the current building codes do not have any information about to how to construct green systems safely and properly. The new document establishes how the green systems should be executed.

The Green Supplement bridges the gap between the green building programs and existing building codes and is a complement to any practiced mechanical and plumbing code. The document addresses issues in areas such as rainwater harvesting, gray water, how to use advanced plumbing products properly, hot water conservation, conservation of energy in HVAC systems and education and training in green plumbing systems.

In January 2008, Green Technical Committee (GTC) was established. The 25-member GTC comprises industry leaders from sustainable mechanical and plumbing fields. Plumbers, engineers, contractors, energy and water conservation experts and inspectors numbering over 60 were also enlisted for task groups.
