Hawai'i Natural Energy Institute Selects Altair Nanotechnologies for Wind Power Integration Demonstration Project

Altair Nanotechnologies, Inc. has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Hawai'i’s Hawai'i Natural Energy Institute (HNEI) as well as the Hawai'i Electric Light Company for supplying a 1-MW ALTI-ESS energy storage system meant for a wind energy integration test.

As per this MOU, Altair Nanotechnologies will offer the power management system that is based on ALTI-ESS battery to ease the output of a functioning wind farm.

This project is developed for testing the battery’s performance characteristics and for demonstrating the battery storage technology’s effectiveness to integrate wind power into a power grid. This test is likely to demonstrate solutions meant for integrating renewable energy in greater levels onto the energy grid, reducing reliance on fossil-fuel energy generation and improving capacity utilization.

This energy storage system will be installed at the Hawi Renewable Development wind park by Hawai'i Electric Light Company on the north region of Hawai'i's Big Island. Funding for this project will be provided by the Office of Naval Research by means of a grant awarded to the University of Hawai'i.
